Tallassee, AL (WSFA) - The Tallassee Corporate Park has earned the title of being an "Alabama AdvantageSite." It means Tallassee is now at the top of the list for recruiting new industries in the state.
Executive Director of the Elmore County Economic Development Authority Barry Mask and his office put six months of work into the project.
"It's a lot of work. We did everything from the surveys, to environmental studies, to getting all the dimensions. It was tons of paperwork to submit to get it done," said Mask.
The AdvantageSite Certification means the park already has the infrastructure needed for an industry to come in and immediately get started. It meets the zoning, size, and accessibility requirements.
Mask added, "When you're on this list, you move up to the top of the list. So, when the Alabama Development Office gets any inquires, they look at you first."
The timing of the announcement couldn't be better.
With Hyundai Heavy Industries coming to Montgomery and the new GE plant slated to be built in Auburn, Tallassee is competing for the companies' tier one and tier two suppliers.
"We couldn't be more excited," said Sheila C. Ledbetter. Sheila owns Sheila C's Burger Barn in Tallassee. She says the more industries that are in town, the better for her bottom line.
"My main business and customers are from the plants here in town," she said. "We're trying our best to make the city business friendly."
Mayor George McCain said, "When you have more jobs, you have more people living here. And that spurs economic growth for our retail community. I think the future is going to be bright."
The Tallassee Corporate Park is 121 acres. It's located on Highway 229, just off Interstate 85.
